ABOUT THE ARTIST + CAUSE:
Artist Statement:
I make paintings, drawings and performances that explore the way we carry external environments and events in our bodies. Using elemental symbols such as mountains, waves, flames and fog I create emotional landscapes that represent states of being. My investigation revolves around personal and collective experiences of fear, care, support and change, predominantly through the lenses of cognitive psychology, spirituality and mysticism.
My methodology revolves around transparency. I want every part of my path to be visible, even the paths not taken, as they are part of the story. I understand this transparency as a kind of vulnerability - not hiding anything. When I rub out or erase I always leave a trace. Trial and error are constant. With speed and urgency I move paint around with a rag and a brush, adding elements and rubbing them out, rendering until right. Led by intuition, I don’t know where I’m going until I get there.
The primary dynamics at play in my paintings are looseness and control. Both are necessary in supporting and balancing one another. I understand the loose gestures as authentic and uninhibited. Big untamed brushstrokes are evidence of my body, its present state and (her)story(ies). Internal, unconscious impressions become external shapes, images, symbols and meanings. With the more controlled side of my practice I am consciously defining these forms to create a story.
Present in my work is a lack of clarity. I have an interest in the state of confusion, mental fog, the cocoon period - somewhere in between. More receptive than active, this is a place where ideas are forming, bubbling beneath the surface; a creatively fertile, boundaryless, secret space where no one knows what’s going on. The paintings I’m making depict an unclear environment where there is no one way. Nothing is certain. No answers, only questions.
Resilience Montreal is a non-profit day shelter situated on the corner of Atwater and Sainte Catherine, offering food, a place to sleep, clean clothes, and support to anyone in need. For several decades, Cabot Square in Montreal has been a gathering place for indigenous people, especially inuit. In the last few years, the square has been the subject of a cleaning operation, a constant addition of police presence, and since the move of Open Door shelter, 14 people have died, mostly indigenous women.”
